I like to individualize my approach to each client.
There are some themes I tend to bring up (in therapy jargon!). I consider interpersonal processes, family systems, emotion focused, and strength based approaches; while integrating multicultural identities and power based experiences. I like to ask questions and go deeper to help us honor and see underlying patterns, emotions, thoughts, and relationship dynamics. When we can understand what is happening, it can help us heal in some ways and be intentional about how to move through it. We get to consider how to manage obvious and less obvious core concerns and barriers to change to make steps toward longer term healing. I also combine strategy based interventions to compliment this process and meet short term needs. I strive to be trauma informed, as I have additional experience and training with trauma work and consider the approach helpful across clients.
Our mental health and well being are intertwined with our contextual factors, including our communities, identities, cultures, and sociopolitical threads around us. I find it important to consider these factors when making sense of our well being and what healing could look like. With some clients, we also consider history that goes back years or generations to make sense of what is happening in their lives today. I welcome people across genders, sexuality, race, ethnicity, spiritual belief systems, disabilities, and caste within my services and love to consider how those parts of us show up in our well being. I consider how to continue learning about experiences different from mine, reflect on my own privileges and biases, while also considering if my services are the best fit for someone's needs in their current season of life.
